Werner Schmidt gave a lecture about straw as a building material at the symposium grow.build.repeat., held by the KIT Faculty of Architecture in December 2020. He presents different design and construction techniques and showed the diverse possibilities of building with straw bales.

In his lecture “Variety of Straw bale Constructions” at the symposium grow.build.repeat., on the one hand he presented projects referencing to historical construction techniques, on the other hand he proves the modern application of the biological building material straw.

Werner Schmidt is one of the most interesting contemporary swiss architects. After graduating from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, he founded his own office in Graubünden. After realizing some unconventional projects, he gains international fame as an architect in the 2000s thanks to convincing buildings made of straw bales in Switzerland, Germany and South Tyrol. Werner Schmidt stands for an architecture with alternative building techniques and natural materials. When planning his buildings, he always keeps the impact on the environment in mind, thus creating sustainable living spaces with a high quality of life.
